Attendance Expectations

Families have made the commitment to participate in co-op, so regular attendance is expected. Co-op functions best when its members arrive on time. Teachers count on students to be seated in their desks so class can promptly begin. And, the very essence of co-op depends on moms being in place for their needed duties.

Furthermore, our co-op model requires parents to remain on campus with their children, but two general circumstances give exception to this rule.

In both of the following circumstances, a temporary guardian must be appointed. This is for the purposes of (1) the child knowing who to go to if they need something but also (2) for the newly responsible mom to check in on the absent mom’s kids. If this temporary guardian is another parent or grandparent, we must have their VIRTUS certificate on file.

1. If parents need to step away from co-op for an hour or two or are unable to attend for the day, children who are 5th grade or older may attend co-op in mom’s absence, because this is a temporary situation, not a re-occurring event. Examples include, but are not limited to attending a doctor’s appointment, being ill and/or caring for an ill child at home, running a quick errand in an off hour. At times, greater flexibility is given for a brief, extended period of time due to unforeseen health issues. Examples include, but are not limited to, caring for an ill family member, recovering from surgery, taking maternity leave.

2.      A high school student (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior) may remain on campus for no more than 2 hours per week without a parent. This policy applies to any co-op family who has been a member of Christ the King Co-op for at least one full school year. (Policy enacted Feb 2019. 12-11 vote). To make use of this policy, the following conditions must be met:

·        A parent must earn and maintain her necessary point total that allows her student to be on campus alone.

·        A guardian must be appointed for each student who remains on campus. This guardian will serve as the parent-figure for the student, as well as the parent-figure whom fellow co-op parents can contact, should an issue arise with the student.

The guardian appointment will be listed on the bulletin board in Room 200, so everyone is fully aware of this guardian/student relationship. If the guardian is unable to be on campus (illness, doctor’s appointment, etc.), it is the job of the guardian to alert the student’s mother so a temporary replacement guardian can be selected.

Furthermore, this policy serves as a litmus test. If your situation does not fit into the parameter of “no more than 2 hours,” then said situation does not fall within the guidelines of this policy and will not be allowed.

And lastly, while all schedule-related requests are listened to (whatever their nature) and effort is made to accommodate these requests, there are never any guarantees. This also has to hold true for a mom who requests that her child be able to attend co-op for 2 hours while she is not in attendance. Scheduling dynamics may prevent 2 classes from being structured back-to-back, so a mom needs to understand this potential. The schedule ultimately has to be constructed in a way that benefits the whole of co-op; it cannot always meet individual requests, whatever those requests may be.
